Why buy SOCKS5 proxy servers at all, and not just HTTP ones
Most people who start looking for SOCKS5 do it for one of two reasons: their antidetect browser asked for it, or their software refused to work over an HTTP connection. Both reasons are valid. SOCKS5 is a lower-level protocol: it does not parse or rewrite your traffic, it simply forwards TCP sessions and, unlike HTTP proxies, can also carry UDP.
That difference matters in practice. UDP support is what makes WebRTC, VoIP, game clients and some mobile app SDKs behave normally through a proxy instead of failing silently or leaking your real address. And because SOCKS5 is protocol-agnostic, it does not touch your headers, so nothing gets "helpfully" added to your requests on the way out.
The catch: not every provider offers it. Plenty of sellers ship HTTP(S) only, which immediately limits compatibility with the tools professionals actually use. So the first filter when you shop is trivial — if SOCKS5 is missing from the spec sheet, move on.

Neither protocol makes you anonymous by itself. Both are just delivery methods. What decides whether a platform trusts your session is the address on the other end of the tunnel.
The protocol is the pipe. The IP is your identity
Anti-fraud systems — Cloudflare Bot Management, DataDome, Akamai Bot Manager, HUMAN, Kasada — start their evaluation with IP intelligence. They look up the address in databases like MaxMind, IPQualityScore or Spur.us and, first of all, check the ASN type: hosting, business, isp or mobile.
This is where cheap options collapse. A datacenter address typically scores 75–100 out of 100 on a fraud scale, where 100 means maximum risk. An IP issued by a real cellular network usually lands at 0–15. Same SOCKS5 protocol, completely different outcome at the very first checkpoint.
There is a structural reason for it. Cellular carriers run Carrier-Grade NAT (RFC 6888): one public IPv4 address is shared by hundreds or thousands of subscribers at once, commonly 500 to 5000. Blocking that single address means blocking a crowd of paying customers, so platforms prefer soft measures — a captcha, rate limiting — instead of a hard ban. That is not a loophole a platform can patch; it is how mobile networks are built.
Pro-tip: the fastest sanity check of any seller is to buy the smallest period available, connect, and look up the IP. If the ASN type comes back as hosting or corporate while the sales page said "mobile", you are looking at substitution, not a mobile network.

Datacenter addresses are fine for internal tooling, monitoring or anything without bot protection. Residential proxies from other vendors sit in the middle and are usually sold per gigabyte. Mobile ports cost more because behind them sits physical hardware: racks of 4G and 5G modems, real SIM cards, operator data plans and staff replacing SIMs when a carrier gets nervous about traffic patterns.
